Celebrating Africa's Giants: Giraffe

The giraffe is the tallest animal in the world and one of the most popular animals in zoos, but the fate of wild giraffes is in the hands of people. The purpose of Celebrating Africa's Giants is to inspire global conservation action through Environmental Education for kids in Tanzania and America.

We developed giraffe-themed activities and high-quality, creative materials that meet educational needs while promoting biodiversity conservation.  We provide educators with training on how to develop and implement innovative, effective conservation-oriented teaching strategies. Our materials are ideal for educators at zoos and schools in America and Europe as part of giraffe/elephant/rhino days, zoo camps, and school visits. This project is a partner of the AZA SAFE (Association of Zoos and Aquariums Saving Animals From Extinction) Giraffe program and includes Giraffe SAFE messaging.

We developed the following materials:
(1) Children’s  storybook (Juma the Giraffe)
Juma is a young giraffe who discovers, through his reflection at the waterhole, that he appears to look like all the other giraffes, and believes that he is not special. Disheartened, he confides his discovery to his mother, who teaches him the reasons why each giraffe trait is important for their lives. But Juma’s mother also shows him that every giraffe has a unique pattern of spots, making each individual different and special. Juma’s mother concludes that every giraffe is special and unique both on the outside and the inside, but she loves her baby Juma most of all.
